Program History

The University of Benghazi (UoB) was established on December 15, 1955, under the name of “Libyan University“. The cornerstone of the university was the Faculty of Arts and Education, including 31 students and 6 staff members in the MANAR Place at the center of Benghazi. In 1973, the university was moved to its current location in the area of Garyounis. In 1976, the university’s name was changed into “University of Garyounis“. Now, the university includes various faculties and centers. The university is located on an area of roughly 530 hectares, including a number of students exceeding 80,000, an almost number of staff members, reaching 3,000, and a number of officials and employees, exceeding 7,000. After the revolution of Feb. 17th and based on the decree of the university’s top management, the university has been renamed “The University of Benghazi“, https://www.uob.edu.ly/

The computer science department was established in 1983 at the faculty of science, the University of Benghazi (Garyounis). In 2004 the department has launched the Graduate program in computer science with two tracks, Artificial Intelligence and Software Engineering, more than 80 students were enrolled in the program.

In 2007 the faculty of Information technology was established, comprises of five departments, and the department of computer science moved from the faculty of science to the faculty of information technology. The graduate program remains unchanged to 2017.
